RingsWhat is renewal of vows ceremony?

A renewal of vows is a wonderful opportunity for you and your husband, wife, to re-affirm your commitment to each other.

Does renewing of vows have any legal effects?

Please be aware that a renewal of vows ceremony has no legal effect.

Why do couples renew vows?

It may be associated with a special wedding anniversary, a wish to celebrate a renewed commitment to each other, or for any couple who have married abroad and now wish to celebrate with family and friends who may not have been present at the original ceremony. Or perhaps those whose original ceremony took place in Covid times and were unable to invite everyone they wanted, due to restrictions on numbers.

You may wish to have a full ceremony involving your family and friends or a very small private ceremony for just you as a couple. The choice is yours to create a ceremony that is meaningful to you. Any married couple, of any age and married for any length of time can arrange a ceremony. You do not have to live in the area in which you wish to hold your ceremony.

How can I make my ceremony special?

As a renewal of vows ceremony has no legal status it is very flexible. Although the ceremony cannot contain any religious content, however the ceremony can look very similar to a wedding with an exchange of vows, promises, rings.

Where can I hold the ceremony?

You can hold your renewal of vows ceremony in either the Council Chamber or the Jubilee Garden at the Town Hall.

When can I have the ceremony?

Ceremonies can take place Monday to Saturday, subject to availability.

Who conducts the ceremony?

The ceremony can be conducted by Dorset Registrars or a celebrant of your choice.

If you wish Dorset Registrars to take your ceremony, to contact them and pay their fees direct call 01305 225153 or email registrars@dorsetcouncil.gov.uk
