Town Council 1

Cllr John Morgan

Having spent my childhood attending the local schools and attempting with varying degrees of success to play for Wimborne football and cricket teams, I consider myself a product of Wimborne. However, that didn’t stop me leaving for Uni and a bigger city as soon as I could. Now, returning 20 years later, I have a better appreciation for the town, its history and its surroundings as well as a desire to make a good town a truly great one.

In my period away from Wimborne, I pursued a career in Insurance, specialising initially in Pricing and Underwriting which ultimately led to me spending several years as an internal consultant with Allianz, based in Munich. This also provided me the opportunity to study for an MBA in Berlin, forge new friendships across Europe and learn a lot about different cultures and ways of doing things. Subsequently, I worked in London with Direct Line developing new ways to detect fraud and creating new products for customers struggling to obtain insurance.

When my father suddenly suffered a stroke, I began to re-evaluate where I was heading. Ultimately, I left Financial Services, moved back to Wimborne and remotely studied a course in Sustainable Resources through UCL.  My best work experiences have always been when working with and helping others, I now think it is time I gave something back hence standing for Council and starting a volunteer role with the Museum of East Dorset.

Wimborne has its challenges; with managing new development, providing appropriate services and infrastructure, giving opportunities to children and teens as well as supporting local business and disadvantaged communities. This must be done whilst managing a ‘cost of living’ crisis, protecting our environment and biodiversity, and adapting to a changing climate. I don’t have a silver bullet, no one does. I believe our communities are full of ideas though and I hope everyone feels they can come and talk to me or another Councillor about ways to solve these issues.
